Five Physics Students Showcase Research Results at APS Meeting

CONWAY, Ark. (April 2, 2012) - Five ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø physics students presented the results of their undergraduate research at the 2012 April meeting of the American Physical Society (APS) in Atlanta, Ga.

  • Fidele Bingwa, a senior from the Republic of Rwanda
  • Julian Giller, a senior from Skokie, Ill.
  • Hannah McWilliams, a junior from Russellville, Ark.
  • B. Jordan Russell, a junior from Marion, Ark.
  • Tyler Webb, a sophomore from Benton, Ark.

APS sponsored the travel for Bingwa to present the work he completed last summer as an intern at the Center for the History of Physics at the American Institute of Physics. The other students' travel was sponsored by Your ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø Odyssey: Engaging in Active Learning.

ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø students represented five of the 36 undergraduate papers that were presented alongside the work of physicists from all over the world at this national meeting.

Eight undergraduates were recognized by the APS and the Society of Physics Students for their outstanding presentations. Four of these were ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø students.

The award recipients and their research are:

  • Julian Giller "Non-linear Imaging of Nanoscale Surface Defects on Alphabet Letter Shaped Colloids in a Uniformly Aligned Nematic Liquid Crystal"
  • Hannah McWilliams "Differential Production Rates in Neutrino Induced Electron-Positron Pair Creation"
  •  B. Jordan Russell "Total Pair Production Rate for Electron Neutrinos in Magnetic Fields"
  •  Tyler Webb "Antineutrino Stimulated Pair Production"

Students were accompanied by ÌÇÐÄvlog¹ÙÍø physics professor Dr. Todd Tinsley.
